BIO
Mary Jo Fox is a self-taught pen & ink and watercolor artist who lives in an area of Central Wisconsin where farmland and Northwoods meet. She displays her work at art shows around the state as well at an occasional gallery. With a combination of a quill-type dip pen, India ink, and watercolor washes she draws and colors the intricate details of the local flora and fauna focusing on the beauty in the everyday. Coming from an artistic family she is honored to carry on the tradition of working to portray the beauty in our natural world.
STATEMENT
I am a watercolor painter that relys on my pen and ink drawings to define the subjects that inspire me.Working with a quill pen and india ink I first make a detailed drawing concentrating on form and shadow and then proceed to watercolor painting to establish value and hue. The ink drawing allows meto portray detail forms that would otherwise be lost. My subject matter is most often botanicals and wildlife close to home, such as flowers or occasionally vegetables from my garden. I am also inspired by bits and pieces I pick up in my walks in our woods. My focus is the beauty in the everyday, the things we tend to walk by without noticing. I am oftensurprised by the intricate form of a common flower such as a columbine or the pattern on a moths wing. Making art to me is a way to pay homage to both my artistic family and the area I was privileged to have grown up in.
